USWNT- 8 vs. Costa Rica- 0
Well, what more could you say about this team! After winning gold in the Olympics, the USWNT came home to Rochester, NY, home of Abby Wambach, to open the Fan Appreciation Tour to an 8-0 victory. But that wasn't the headline of the show, Coach Pia Sundhage announced that she was stepping down from the team after the September 16th game in Carson, CA only hours before the match. Coach Sundhage has recorded a record of 88-6-10, with two Olympic Golds and one Silver Women's World Cup medal in her five years as head coach. So today's win wasn't just about fan appreciation it was about celebrating the success of Coach Sundhage.
The scoring started in the 13th minute with Megan Rapinoe scoring off of a free kick. From there the hometown native Abby Wambach scored two consecutive goals in the 24th minute and 32nd minute. Right after, Alex Morgan netted a four goal in the 38th minute, by beating the defense to the goal and blasting a shot to the left of the keeper. Megan Rapinoe finished the first half scoring in the 45th minute right before the whistle blew. In the second half Pia Sundhage brought in numerous subs causing the game to slow down until Sydney Leroux, second half sub for Abby Wambach, came in and beat the defense to bring the game to 6-0. Seven minutes later, Carli Lloyd took a free kick right outside of the box and curved the ball right over the defensive wall of Costa Rica into the back of the net. With 11 minutes left in the game Heather O'Reilly finished the game with a sliding in goal from a cross by Leroux. The game ended with an 8-0 for the first game of the Fan Tribute Tour.
Stay tuned for the next game on August 16th against Australia as we welcome home Alex Morgan, Shannon Boxx, Megan Rapinoe, Rachel Buehler, Sydney Leroux, and Amy Rodriguez.

USWNT heading to California 9/16
On September 16th, the USWNT will be taking on Australia in their second game of their Fan Tribute Tour in Carson, CA. We will be welcoming home players like Alex Morgan, Shannon Boxx, Megan Rapinoe, Rachel Buehler, Sydney Leroux, and Amy Rodriguez. This game is big for three reasons:
- It is the second game of the Fan Tribute Tour and on US Soccer home soil. The Home Depot Center has hosted the USWNT for years along with the USMNT and is training stomping grounds for both teams.
- This will be the second to last game of Head Coach, Pia Sundhage.
- Sarah Walsh, of Australia, will be retiring after these games against the USWNT.
USWNT- 2 vs. Australia- 1
USWNT two goal scorers, Shannon Boxx and Alex Morgan.
The USWNT did it again in Carson, CA on September 16th. And who better to lead the game than California native, Alex Morgan herself. In the first half, Australia looked as though they may be looking towards their first ever win against the USWNT. Ball possession between the USWNT was very weak and they couldn't connect passes. Australia continued to pressure their back line and causing Hope Solo to make numerous saves from Australia's constant attack. Sarah Walsh gave Hope Solo a big scare when she got a break away and took a shot at the goalkeeper. However, the ball hit the post and bounced out instead of in. Moments later, in the 34th minute, Australia took the lead from a break away by Lisa de Vanna. The USWNT looked disorientated and unsure what to do. The half ended with Australia up by one.
Once the second half whistle blew, it looked like a whole new USWNT out there. Four subs came on including Midfielders, Heather O'Reilly and Shannon Boxx. Within seconds, the USWNT was pressuring hard against Australia's back line thanks to the skills of Shannon Boxx and Heather O'Reilly. In the 55th minute, Heather O'Reilly intercepted a pass in the midfield and took off in full sprint, she found Alex Morgan to her right, Morgan settled it and fired a rocket off her preferred right foot. The game was tied. Moments late in the 63rd minute, Alex Morgan had another breakaway that started with a pass from Tobin Heath. With a defender on her, Morgan pushed the ball just hard enough to the left to be able to make it past the keeper. However, the keeper was not pleased and tripped up Morgan purposely, causing a penalty kick for the USWNT. Shannon Boxx, another California native, stepped up to the spot and fired the penalty kick into the right side of the net. The USWNT gained the lead to win the game 2-1. The USWNT pressured all the way until the final minutes of the game. Once again, the USWNT came back from a 1-0 deficit to win the game.

Pia's Farewell Match USWNT- 6 vs. Australia- 2
The USWNT took on Australia in Commerce City, CO on September 19th in what would be a very emotional match for many reasons. One being Sarah Walsh of Australia retiring from professional soccer. The big one was Pia Sundhage, head coach of the USWNT, stepping down and coaching her final game for the team. The match started out much differently then the same on the 16th because the USWNT came out with a fire burning. They were playing for Pia. In the 25th, Heather O'Reilly opened the scoring for the USWNT by a beautiful shot from outside the box. The team celebrated with a tribute to Pia, by having everyone play a fake air guitar. However, the USWNT let down their guard a bit and allowed two goals by Australia only minutes apart from each other. Goalkeeper Hope Solo had no way of saving the Aussie's shots. Sarah Walsh scored the second goal for Australia in her final professional game ever. That moment was recognized by both Australia and the USWNT. Australia was up 2-1, until Alex Morgan scored in the 43rd minute off of a beautifully placed ball by defender, Kelley O'Hara. At half both teams went into the locker room tied 2-2.
Moments into the second half Alex Morgan blasted a shot that deflected of Abby Wambach's foot into the goal. The USWNT were now up 3-2. Right after Abby scored, Alex scored again off of a cross from defender and second half sub, Heather Mitts. Then six minutes later, Megan Rapinoe sent in a corner kick that Shannon Boxx headed directly into the corner of the goal, the USWNT went up 5-2 within 15 minutes of the second half. But the shots didn't stop there. Alex Morgan continued to take shot after shot on goal. She was playing one of her best games in the 52 game career of Alex Morgan. Second half sub, Sydney Leroux finished the game off in the 82nd minute with a low diving header from another cross from Megan Rapinoe. The whistle blew minutes later, ending the game at 6-2 and Pia Sundhage's five year career with the USWNT with a record of 91-6-10. The team celebrated Pia's career by serenading her as she took her last victory lap around the stadium. Pia has turn this team into an unbeatable force to be reckoned with and she will be greatly missed.
