Fundraising and GrantsSports fund-raising has become on of the key successes to up-and-coming sports teams. Throughout the course of their existence teams will fund-raise money to either: 1. increase their fan base. 2. Provide better team equipment. 3. Update or make their field more suitable. 4. Provide money to a charity or outreach program that the team works closely with. These are just a few examples of what fund-raising can be used for in sports. Throughout this course I will be updating new information about grants and fund-raising.

Tony Hawk Foundation- Skatepark GrantThe Tony Hawk Foundation is one of the few foundations that provides grants and funding to low income cities for the construction of skateparks. The sport of skateboarding is growing rapidly and with the Tony Hawk Foundation grant, kids can have the option of skateboarding instead of getting involved in illegal activities. Using skateboarding as a healthy alternative will provide kids with an outlet and new level of love for discipline in the sport. Providing a skatepark in low income areas will decrease injury and the youth crime rate. That's why the Tony Hawk Foundation is a great source for this grant.
The City of Mesa, Arizona in Maricopa County would be a great location for a new skatepark, specially the Riverview Shopping Center area. The city itself is very crime stricken and needs to have an outlet for youth to turn to. The youth need some sort of positive influence because the crime rate increases yearly. This year alone Mesa has had 11,158 thefts, 112.9 robberies, and 1,140 assaults. The crime index went up to 282.2. The city's crime rate increasing is only making it harder for kids to have a successful future. If the Tony Hawk Foundation can grant funding to the city the skatepark would change lives. The population in Mesa is 439,041 with 49.2% being males and 50.8% females. The median household income is $49,446 in bigger areas of Mesa. Last year the parks and recreations budget for new land was $38 million. With that being said, Mesa is trying to use the Five Year Capital Improvement Program (CIP), to guarantee new centers. This would work perfectly for creating a new skatepark. There is one other skatepark in Mesa, known as Reed Park, however the skatepark itself is very small ad doesn't have many features. With a new skatepark in Mesa, we can lower the crime rate and substance abuse in the youth around the community. For more information check out: City of Mesa. City of Mesa, (2012).
