On September 7th at 7pm, Arizona State University (ASU) Soccer will be taking on Houston in the Sun Devil Desert Classic. This mini-tournament has two teams competing against both Arizona teams, ASU and Arizona. Last year ASU split the tournament with a win and a tie. This year Houston and Pepperdine are the two competing schools. On Sunday, ASU will take on Pepperdine at 1:30pm. In this event there are a few key points to consider, including players to watch and recent scores. Take a look:
#4 Devin Marshall- Forward, Scored two goals in the recent win over NAU #38 Nina Brueggemann- Defender from Germany and member of the German National Team KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THESE PLAYERS!
Let's get ready for some soccer!! |
GAME DAY 9/7: ASU-0 vs. Houston-1Starters for ASU:
00- Chandler Morris 3-McKenzie Berryhill 5-Tommi Goodman 7-Courtney Tinnin 10-Jasmine Roth 15-Holland Crook 17-Cali Farquharson 28-Taylor McCarter 29-Nicki Stone 33-Sierra Joseph 38- Nina Brueggemann From the first whistle, ASU was off to a dominating start. Cali Farquharson was quick on the ball and made the defense do their job. Only five minutes into the game ASU had their first shot on goal by Nina Brueggemann, a defender from Germany, who had a header off of a corner quick. ASU completely dominated the first half by moving the ball up-field through Taylor McCarter and defender, Jasmine Roth. The combination passes between these two were causing many problems for Houston. About 25 minutes into the first half, Jasmine Roth made a run down the left wing finding Cali Farquharson, but only to miss wide right. The ball movement between the midfield and the defense for ASU was absolutely phenomenal to watch. The first half ended with a 0-0 tie. The second half started right along with the rain. ASU used the same 11 to start the second half. Only a minute into the second half Houston took control of the ball and fired a shot off. The game continued with 50/50 possession for the next 15 minutes. From there Holland Crook lit a spark in her team. Whether it was bringing the ball out wide or firing a shot from right outside the 18 yard box. Cali Farquharson had a couple more great looks at goal. But unfortunately the ball found the goalkeeper each time. Moments later defender, Nina Brueggemann took the ball up on a wide open right side and fired off a shot, however once again it was blocked. ASU continued to dominate the rest of the game with Jasmine Roth pushing the ball up as many times as possible and Holland Crook cutting and splitting the defense numerous times. ASU had 70% of the possession until the unthinkable happened. In the 87th minute, Houston fired a shot into the box which was blocked by an ASU defender. The ref called for a penalty kick on what was side to be a hand ball in the box. #21 from Houston stepped up to the penalty spot and took the PK. Goalkeeper Chandler Morris guessed the right corner, but the ball just slipped underneath her. With three minutes left, ASU fought hard taking shot after shot. They earned a corner kick with ten seconds left, but were just unable to capitalize. After a hard fought game Houston won 1-0. After the game I spoke with two of the players about the game, their next game against Pepperdine and the season itself, here's what they hard to say. When asking Nina Brueggemann what she thought of the game and what they needed to work on for the next she said, "We need to be able to connect better in the second half and finish our chances. If we don't shoot we can't win, we have to take shoots." I also spoke to Nina Brueggemann about transitioning from the Bundesliga to college soccer at ASU she said, " The systems are very different, we play very strong here and quick, we don't just kick the ball and run we read the game. I like my team a lot and I love my college." Nina Brueggemann played club soccer for a Bundesliga team in Germany known as Hamburger SV, which brings a whole new perspective to American soccer. After speaking to Nina, I asked Jasmine Roth a few questions. When ask what she expected from the season she said, "You know we are trying to come out and try to bring the season up to a winning percentage so we can hopefully compete for a national championship." Jasmine Roth is also the only upperclassmen on the defensive line, so when asked how she felt about playing with a freshman back line she said this, "My freshman year it was all freshman and just one defender, so I guess the roles are just reversed now with me this year. So I have to take more leadership back there with them, I'm working on trying to communicate with them and be a role model for them, but it is difficult for me because I have to help work with them and they have to keep their focus as I have to keep my focus as well. I have to hold myself at a higher standard." Jasmine also went on to say that having she does encourage Nina Brueggemann to move up a lot and be an attacking defender as well, she also mentioned the presence Nina has brought to the team, "She's definitely brought some size to the back line which we lacked last year so that's nice and she also has been running down the line which is nice as well." The last question I asked Jasmine Roth was what they wanted to do on Sunday against Pepperdine, "We want to come out and get a shutout and hopefully beat them so we can have a top 10 win over a good team." Even with the loss tonight the girls were very energetic and ready for their next game. Special thank you to Steve Rodriguez, Jasmine Roth, Nina Brueggemann, and Shane for allowing me to have the opportunity to speak with them after the game. Till next time, have a great night and Go Devils. |
